University of Mons (UMONS) was established in 2009 through the merger of the Faculty of Engineering of Mons and the University of Mons-Hainaut. Its roots date back to the École des Mines de Mons founded in 1837, making it Belgium's first engineering school and one of the country's oldest universities. With its main campus in Mons, a UNESCO-designated European Capital of Culture, and a secondary campus in Charleroi, UMONS is a member of the Top Industrial Managers for Europe (T.I.M.E. Alliance) and the European University Association, as well as a founding member of the Pôle hainuyer consortium.
